At TWH we love nothing better than to showcase home grown talent – talent like Kim Ellery. Known for her 70’s styling and innovative use of textiles, this Aussie designer behind ellery.com is definitely worth keeping an eye on…
Ellery was raised in Perth, studied Fashion Design and Production, and attended Summer school in Central St Martins. She worked at Rushh magazine for four years and attributes that time as invaluable to her insight into the Australian fashion market. Her label took flight when Trevor Stones, a fashion stylist for Vogue, photographed a pair of glitter tights that Ellery had designed.
What we love about Ellery is that although her fabrics are milled in Italy and Switzerland, her clothing is constructed in Sydney. There aren’t many labels that manage to maintain their productions in Australia and we applaud Kim for managing to do so. The exception to this are her footwear lines, which are made and constructed in Italy (it’s hard pressed to find any Australian production of footwear these days).
But what of her shoes? Here are a couple of our top picks from the Ellery range – Beginning with these boots from the Ellery Spring 17 Collection, which have a real 60’s vibe (we’re seeing a chic Emma Peel)! The block heel creates great stability and the zip closure at the back provides easy access into the boot. There isn’t any stitching around the toe either, so these boots may be a better choice for those with minor toe deformities such as hammer or claw toes.
And these flats from the Ellery Fall 17 collection – The decorative chain and jewel feature is cleverly designed to hang loose rather than strapped down over the top of the mid foot (which is the more traditional, albeit uncomfortable, approach). This means that our higher-arched friends won’t struggle with tightness and nerve pinching across the top of the foot. Innovative design or happy accident? Our bet is on the former.
What about this white Ellery slingbacks? We love the pewter block heel and the low cut ‘V neck’ upper. The heel height is rather decent, so maybe wear these when there is not too much standing or walking planned. It would serve well to use cushioning under the ball of the foot in these shoes to improve overall comfort and prolong wear time (always a plus).
Keep an eye out for more Ellery shoes on TWH in the future – they’re definitely favourites of ours. As always we aim to provide the heads up on what’s out there, and all of the very best in the way of stylish yet functional shoes at TWH. Remember to head on over to The Shoe Equation to find that perfect shoe to suit all your footwear needs!
Until next time
