This week on the TWH blog we feature #3 in our Iconic Shoes series – the ever-popular Valentino Rockstud! This shoe was first created by the 58 year old fashion house back in 2010. Since then there have been many variations on the original design which are still selling out today. Love them or find them ho hum, the Valentino Rockstud seems to be here to stay and we think deserves a place in your shoe closet.
The brainchild of Valentino co-creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the Rockstud first graced the catwalk in the form of a low heeled slingback. Since then, it has been said that very few designers have so successfully combined grunge and romantic conservative chic so well. Perhaps that’s why the Rockstud works – the wearer can wear it with practically anything from jeans to a suit. A play on the boring pump, the rockstud allows the wearer to elevate from work to play effortlessly. And with so many style options to choose from the only decision is which one?
The ballet flat version is a great choice for those days when you may be standing or walking a fair amount. Really flat shoes are not for everyone believe it or not. If you are a regular heel wearer be cautious of jumping straight into these for a full day. Calf strains and plantar fascia strains are common injuries when there is not enough available flexion at the ankle. Also remember the TWH tip on fitting pointed toe shoes – it may be necessary to go up ½ to a full size to accommodate the forefoot comfortably. Don’t forget to shop at the end of the day as this is when your foot is at its largest. Also be aware that studding can sometimes cause irritation on the foot. The use of silicone spots or strips would be useful in offloading pressure points from these shoes.
What about the Punkouture in patent red? Probably not a classic choice but you will certainly stand out from the crowd in these shoes. The midi heel is a good choice to keep the ball of the foot comfortable and the straps are adjustable for a good fit and improved stability. The patent leather would require some wearing in though as it is notoriously unforgiving. Try wearing it around the house with thick socks or use a shoe stretcher either at home or with the help of a great bootmaker to relieve any pressure points. Once again silicone spots or strips would be advisable if there are any friction points on the foot. A forefoot cushion pad would also improve the overall comfort of the shoe as the sole is thin leather.
What about these for a more stable option? The block heel is very popular at the moment and this shoe is a great choice for Summer. Again a ball of foot cushion would improve the comfort of the forefoot. Silicone strips may be necessary at least temporarily, if there are any issues with friction from the studs.
Or maybe you fancy the comfort version of this iconic shoe? We aim to please at TWH and have found an option for all foot types! This shoe is obviously a great choice for a day of shopping. The elevation or pitch of the shoe is good too and the height here should be comfortable for most people. We love the moulded sole! Perfect dress shoe option for those with active foot complaints! Again, we would recommend silicone strips if the studding causes any irritation.
We have our favourite Rockstud up on The Shoe Equation for a closer peak if you think you want to make an investment purchase. Xmas is just around the corner and it’s the perfect party shoe.
