How an Irish Tradition Became the New ‘It Shoe’: The Ghillie Pump

This week we are introducing you to another shoe style that is currently popular with designer and midrange footwear brands – The Ghillie pump! These shoes were originally a soft flexible flat shoe worn by Irish dancers, believe it or not. It’s defining feature is the fine laces that criss-cross over the foot and then tie together either at the front or the back of the ankle. The Well-Heeled loves this style due to the stability features, but also because it lends itself to most foot types with an adjustable upper. Since its dancing origins the Ghillie has evolved and is now available in flats, pumps and heels. Quality footwear will also contain rigid heel counters and more supportive uppers to complement the iconic lacing detail, giving the shoe an edgy appeal. Ghillies look amazing with jeans, leather or even an evening gown. Here are few of our favourites at the moment….

Who doesn’t love a bit of leopard?  The Halogen “Owen”  is a flat version of the Ghillie which showcases the essential straps in tan complementing beautifully. We love the gold studding as well!

Yes please! The Zimmerman’s Ghillie Heel is unique as it sports a strap across the forefoot. The deep heel counter would give great support but you may need to watch out for irritation. Take a look at our latest on YouTube to get our take on how to deal with this problem!

But wait! There’s more –

Isabel Marant has done a sterling job on her version of the Ghillie. We love the eyelet detail!

These Ghillies by Forever New are right on trend and really affordable!

So whatever takes your fancy here go forth and give the Ghillie a test drive! It’s sure to be a staple in your wardrobe this season.

Until next time,
